Excellence in Innovation

In January 2015, Globus launched a challenge called Hunger on the Move. Globus family of brands teamed up with Calorie Cloud and gave their employees the opportunity to fight world hunger without costing them anything. Calorie Cloud is a program that takes your calories and turns them into food for malnourished children around the world. Calorie Cloud uses donations to provide children in areas with high malnutrition with RUTF (ready-to-use therapeutic food). A RUTF is a kind of fortified peanut paste that’s been carefully formulated to provide all of a child’s basic nutritional needs. Just three servings a day can save the life of a starving child.

All employees had to donate was their physical activity (in the form of burned calories). Every calorie they burned was added to the company tally. At the end of the challenge, the burned-calorie total determined how many children are saved from malnutrition. Through their online wellness portal, Sonic Boom, employees kept track of their calories burned over the six-week contest. (Associates could also make donations to Calorie Cloud in addition to participating in this contest.) Their goal was to burn one million calories, which they far exceeded by burning 1,185,230 calories. The organization matched each calorie burned by 5 and therefore they donated 5,926,150 calories and saved 79 children in countries like Africa & Asia from malnutrition.

HL: Why did your business decide become a Health Links Certified Healthy Business?:

Globus Family of Brands (GFB): We decided to become a Health Links Certified Healthy Business so that we could see how our program compared to others and to also have the ability to network and idea share with other business that have wellness as a priority.

HL: What benefits did the Certification bring to your business?:
GFB: The benefits it brought to the business was a sense of accomplishment for the wellness committee that we are taking the correct steps in the area of wellness and it also helped us to attend the luncheon and read other success stories to get ideas on how we can enhance our program.

HL: How has this Certification changed the way your business thinks about health promotion and safety?:
GFB: It has not changed our thinking but I think it has enhanced our thinking around wellness is something we want to continue to focus on because it's good for our associates and their families; which translates as being good for the business.

HL: How has your employee health and safety program given back to your community?:
GFB: The Globus family of brands is invested in giving back. Make-A-Wish and Arapahoe County Human Services are our two corporate charities.  Throughout the year, we do various charitable and community activities to give back, including events with Tourism Cares, National Parks Foundation and South Suburban Parks and Recreation.
